Strengthening health systems through strategic supply chain planning

Strategic planning, implementation, and management of health supply chains have long been recognised as the foundation of quality healthcare delivery. These processes ensure reliable access to essential medicines, medical consumables, and equipment—strengthening health systems’ resilience and driving value-based health outcomes.

From 24–28 November 2025, CIPS, through its Health Procurement Africa (HPA) Programme, provided technical assistance during a five-day workshop focused on developing the National Supply Chain Strategy 2.0 (2026–2030). This collaborative effort brought together key stakeholders to chart the next phase of Nigeria’s health supply chain transformation. The new strategy was designed to build on the successes of the current 2021–2025 strategy, which concludes on 31 December 2025.

Our Nigeria Country Manager, Irobodu Joseph Omokhapue, MCIPS, actively participated in this strategic meeting led by the National Product Supply Chain Management Programme, under the Food & Drugs Services Department, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

The workshop focused on developing a National Health Products Supply Chain Strategy and Implementation Plan for 2026–2030, incorporating lessons learned from the current strategy, implementation data, emerging trends, and the evolving supply chain landscape.

As part of this vision, CIPS-HPA contributed actionable insights and best practices gained from its work across national and sub-national levels from its health procurement systems strengthening interventions within public procuring institutions. These contributions will help catalyse improvements in Nigeria’s health supply chain, ensuring sustainability and resilience for years to come.
