Revolutionizing Healthcare in Africa: HPA's Groundbreaking Impact

A Leap Forward with the HPTU Scorecard

In the dynamic landscape of public health, the need for robust, efficient, and sustainable health procurement systems is paramount. This is where we as Health Procurement Africa (HPA) are making a profound impact.

HPA's recent collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH) and its Directorate of Health Products and Technologies (DHPT) has culminated in the development of a groundbreaking tool: the Health Products and Technologies (HPTU) scorecard. This tool represents a leap in assessing health system performance, leveraging the six building blocks of the health system as its foundational framework.

The HPTU scorecard categorizes functions into four distinct levels, charting a path of progression towards optimal operational maturity. Attaining level 4 in this framework is not just an achievement; it symbolizes a health system's capability to deliver at its best.

The primary aim of this initiative goes beyond assessment; it is about empowerment. Strengthening Health Products and Technologies Units (HPTUs) empowers them to influence and streamline supply chain functions, ensuring the availability of essential health products and technologies at all service levels. This objective is in perfect harmony with HPA's overarching mission: to enhance health outcomes by ensuring sustainable access to health products and technologies (HPTs) and raising the bar for procurement standards in public health institutions across Africa.

The DHPT, along with various implementing partners, has been instrumental in operationalizing HPTUs in all 47 counties. The HPTU scorecard is more than a tool; it is a compass that guides these units towards maturity, ensuring their effectiveness and efficiency in delivering healthcare services.

The importantmeeting that set this project in motion was hosted by Afya Ugavi, with additional technical support from ARC and inSupply. This collaboration highlights the power of partnership in addressing complex healthcare challenges.

The journey of revolutionizing health procurement and delivery systems in Africa is ongoing. As HPA continues to lead and collaborate on such innovative initiatives, the horizon looks promising. The impact of these efforts will resonate across the continent, elevating the standard of healthcare and, most importantly, saving lives.

The HPTU scorecard is a beacon of hope and a testament to what can be achieved through dedication, collaboration, and innovation. By enabling better management and delivery of health services, it's paving the way for a healthier, more resilient Africa. This is just the beginning of a larger narrative — one where every advancement brings us closer to a world where quality health care is accessible to all.

As we look to the future, the role of organizations like HPA and their partners becomes increasingly vital. It's through these alliances that the healthcare landscape in Africa will continue to evolve and improve. The HPTU scorecard isn't just a measure of progress; it's a catalyst for change, driving us towards a future where health and well-being are within reach for every African citizen.

Join us as we celebrate this milestone and continue to work towards a healthier, more prosperous Africa. The journey is long, but with each step, we move closer to realizing our vision of a continent where good health is a norm, not a privilege.
